Debt
Counselling
Don’t be ashamed to ask for help. Try to sort your debt out as soon
as it becomes apparent and before it becomes insurmountable. You
do not have to be hugely in debt before you seek help. You may have
a small but serious debt problem e.g. rent arrears. Debt counselling
(available from the Student Union Advice Centre or Student Support
Services) involves addressing the problem in a practical way. You
will receive advice on how to prioritise your debts, how to negotiate
with your creditors and arrange repayment of the money you owe,
and guidance on ways of maximising income.
Stay Calm and Try To Deal With The Situation
Ideally, you won’t have too many debts to burden you but sometimes,
students do get into problems with paying for certain goods and
services.
Rent arrears - can lead to the
loss of your dwellings. If you are falling behind on your rent payments,
seek help. Try to talk to your landlord and negotiate rather than
taking panic action (such as selling a valued possession or paying
with funds set aside for something else that is vital).
Fuel and utilities arrears -
can lead to you being cut off. Phone the relevant company and try
to work out a repayment programme.
Debts to the university - such
as unpaid rent, fees, library fines and crèche fees may result in
the withholding of results and qualifications and refusal of registrations.
Do not ignore the debt but contact the relevant departments - either
directly or through the Student Union or Student Services - and
explain your situation and negotiate a solution.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS NOTE:
As an international student, it is a condition of your entry to
the UK that you have sufficient funds to meet your fees and living
expensed during your course. If you find yourself in financial difficulty
you should first consult the International Office or the Students'
Union Advice Centre where they will be able to advise you on the
best action in your particular circumstances.
